DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY I
The following list has been compiled from many different sources.
- 16-bit image
- An image containing 256 or fewer colors [1]
- 24=bit image
- An image containing roughly 32,000 colors [1]
- aliasing
- gives the image rough edges, a jagged look
- bit
- "binary digit." A bit is the basic unit of digital information. Eight bits equals one byte.
- BMP
- Windows bitmap graphic. Lower quality images.
- byte
- eight bits.
- CCD
- Charge-coupled device. One of two types of computer chips used to capture images in digital cameras. [1]
- cloning
- The process of painting one portion of an image onto another image or another part of the same image. [1]
- CMYK
- The print color model, in which cyan, magenta, yellow and kelvin (black) inks are mixed to produce colors. [1]
- color correction
- The process of adjusting the amount of different primary colors in an image. [1]
- compositing
- Combining two or more images in an image editor. [1]
- downloading
- transferring computer data from one computer or device to another (eg: downloading images from a camera to the computer)
- dpi
- Dots per inch. The higher the dpi, the more detailed a printed image will be, and the larger the file size.
- file format
- types of files. TIFF, EPS, BMP, JPG, GIF are examples. Each format has a different purpose.
- gigabyte
- approximately 1,000 megabytes, or 1 billion bytes. [1]
- grayscale
- An image consisting only of shades of grey, from black to white. [1]
- kilobyte
- One thousand bytes. Abbreviated as K or Kb [1]
- LCD
- Liquid crystal display. A display screen on many digital cameras [1]
- marquee
- The dotted outline that results when you select a portion of your image. [1]
- megabyte
- One million bytes. Abbreviated as MB or meg.
- noise
- Grainness in an image, caused by too little light or a defect in the electrical signal generated during the image-capture process. [1]
- pixel
- Short for picture element. The basic building block of every image.
- resolution
- The number of pixels per linear inch (ppi) in an image. Generally speaking, higher resolution means better images. Also used to describe printer, screen, or scanner capabilities. [1]
- RGB
- The standard color model for digital images; all colors are created by mixing red, green, and blue light. [1]
- sharpening
- Applying an image-correction filter inside an image-editor to create the appearance of sharper focus. [1] Too much sharpness can ruin an image.
- uploading
- See downloading.
- USB
- Universal Serial Bus. A type of high speed port included on our school computers. Peripheral devices such as digital cameras, printers, scanners, memory-card readers and some mice can be connected through the USB port.
